The purpose of the Special Events Committee is to position the Junior League of Springfield to become a community leader in our support of and participation in community events.  The committee collaborates with other local non-profits and agencies to help meet their needs, both for donations and volunteers.

 Our committee plans DIAMs (Done in a Meeting), which are opportunities for members to donate/contribute at each of our monthly meetings to a community group.  Last year for instance, we collected gift cards for the Make A Wish foundation.  We also plan DIADs (Done in a Day), which are opportunities for members to volunteer with a community group.  Last year for instance, we worked at the Contact Ministries Holiday Giveaway, distributing food and gifts.  In total from June 2006 to June 2007 Junior League members worked 240 volunteer hours and raised $2,525 worth of goods for our DIAMs and DIADs. 

 The Special Events Committee also plans the Kids in the Kitchen event, which is an international initiative designed to help communities address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition.  In April 2007, we held an event at the Boys and Girls Club of Springfield, where children learned about healthy eating habits and exercise and prepared a lasagna dinner and salad to take home to their families.

Community News Announcements:  If your non-profit organization has an upcoming event about which you would like to notify our members, it can be listed in our Community News handout provided at each or our general meetings.  The deadline is the first of each month to insure distribution to our members at the general meeting.  General meetings are usually held on the second Tuesday of each month (excluding June, July and August).
