Domestic Violence Against Women and its Effect on Children (1997)

Whereas, the Association of Junior Leagues International believes that domestic violence is unacceptable and that:

  • women and children have the rights and privileges of protection and safety;

  • and women and children have the right to live in violence-free households.

Therefore be it resolved that the Association of Junior Leagues International will support efforts to eliminate factors that contribute to the perpetuation of domestic violence against women and its effect on children.

Preferred Approaches:

  1. Public Awareness and Education Campaigns

  2. Training of Medical, Law Enforcement, and Legal System Personnel

  3. Promotion of Access and Availability to Appropriate Community Services

  4. Coordination, Networking and Collaboration Among Service Providers and Advocates

School Readiness (1998)

WHEREAS, the Association of Junior Leagues International believes:

School readiness for children ages 0 - 6 is the foundation for school success; and all children should be able to enter school emotionally, physically, socially, and intellectually ready to learn,

Therefore be it resolved, that the Association of Junior Leagues International will:

  • support parents and caregivers in their responsibilities concerning school readiness;

  • promote developmentally-appropriate child care and preschool programs;

  • work to ensure all children have access to essential health screenings and immunizations, receive adequate nutrition, and live in violence-free environments; and

  • encourage communities, the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors, schools, and families to share in these responsibilities.

Preferred Approaches:

  1. Educate Parents and Caregivers about Early Childhood Development

  2. Develop and Promote Quality Child Development Programs for Children ages 0 - 6

  3. Coordinate and Promote Programs to Ensure Health Screenings, Immunizations, Nutrition and other Factors Affecting a Child's Physical Development

  4. Support Public Awareness and Education Campaigns

  5. Encourage Coordination, Communication, and Collaboration among Community and Government Programs and Services

Voluntarism (1998)

WHEREAS, the Association of Junior Leagues International believes:

Through volunteering, individuals strengthen their communities; Through voluntarism, societies establish and protect the right of individuals to work toward their special interest in a welcoming environment;

Therefore, be it resolved

That the Association of Junior Leagues International affirms its commitment to promote volunteering among individuals of diverse backgrounds and ages and to champion voluntarism locally, nationally and internationally.

  1. Women Volunteers

  2. Youth Volunteers

  3. Families

  4. Early Retirees/Senior Citizens

  5. Volunteer Recognition

Volunteers and Technology

  • Develop volunteer opportunities through advanced technology

  • Explore opportunities for technology to meet the unique and special need of volunteers.

Collaborations, Networking and Partnerships

  • Engage many different cultural communities in efforts to forge collaborations.

  • Promote voluntarism internationally.

  • Participate in Conferences on a local, regional, national and international level which promote partnerships.

Corporate Voluntarism

  • Encourage governments to support voluntarism by providing tax incentives for corporate volunteer time and corporate contributions.

  • Encourage Corporations to create matched giving programs and underwriting programs, which contribute to voluntarism.

Charitable Contributions

  • Encourage programs, which educate the public about the connection between volunteering and giving financial support to an organization or cause.

  • Encourage tax incentives for individual charitable contributions in each of the four AJLI countries.

  • Support advocacy efforts for charitable tax deductions.

Advocacy

  • Urge governments to adopt legislation that supports and enhances voluntarism.

  • Develop and participate in public information (marketing) campaigns to raise popular support for volunteer efforts.

Accountability

  • Recognize model programs, which stress accountability within their volunteer programming.

  • Encourage administrative and financial accountability within voluntary organizations.

Training, Education and Development

  • Direct resources to educate, train and develop volunteers.

  • Showcase successful programs, which demonstrate the benefits of education and development of volunteer work.

  • Develop trained leadership.
